TCWR operates with a loyal, community-connected team of eleven local staff, including Aboriginal women with deep ties to the region.
Our embedded knowledge fosters strong networks and ensures culturally relevant service delivery. The organisation operates on an annual budget of approximately $1.4 million under a five-year funding agreement.
Incorporated in 1989, Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge (TCWR) stands as the sole specialist Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) service for the Tennant Creek and Barkly Region. Dedicated to empowering women and children, TCWR offers holistic, trauma-informed support, including accommodation, education, counselling, and advocacy for those at risk or experiencing violence.
By working closely with community members and partner organisations, TCWR ensures that its services address locally identified needs and priorities, aligning with the unique challenges faced by the region.
With 98% of its clients being Aboriginal women and children, TCWR is uniquely positioned to address intergenerational violence. Many clients have faced violence across multiple generations—as children, mothers, or grandmothers.
Our Core Services Include:
- Crisis Accommodation & Case Management: Emergency housing, support, and referrals for women and children experiencing or at risk of DFV.
- Domestic Violence Counselling & Education: Counselling services and community programs aimed at raising awareness and fostering resilience among women.
- Critical Intervention Outreach: Outreach case management for Aboriginal women and children, helping them navigate risk factors and access essential support.
Our Services and Approach
At the heart of TCWR's service model is trauma-informed care, tailoring case management and counselling to meet the individual safety needs of each client. The organisation also emphasises healing through initiatives like the Peace Garden, which offers a nurturing space for personal growth and recovery.
The Role of Flexible Funding
Flexible Funding plays a crucial role in responding to the immediate needs of women and children in crisis. It provides financial assistance for essential items and services, including:
- Food and Utilities: Meeting basic needs such as groceries and power, which are among the most frequent requests.
- Transport and Relocation: Offering bus tickets and transport support to help women move to safer towns with better support networks.
- Hostel and Program Access: Supporting clients with temporary accommodation or travel to rehabilitation programs.
This funding also enables women to establish safer lives away from violent partners, guided by the Risk Assessment Management Framework (RAMF) to ensure funds are utilised effectively and transparently.
TCWR remains committed to fostering safety, healing, and empowerment for women and children, addressing both immediate crises and long-term needs. Through partnerships, local knowledge, and community-driven priorities, the organisation continues to make a significant impact in Tennant Creek and the broader Barkly region.
