She is the mother of Djuarn “DJ” Baker-Adams, who tragically lost her life yesterday, allegedly killed by her ex-partner in Slacks Creek.

This devastated mother has only just received the worst news imaginable — the loss of her daughter.

Yet here she is.

Bravely and courageously speaking to the media, demanding answers, advocating for change and fighting for her daughter’s justice.

Patricia, I want you to know that we see you.

We are so deeply sorry for the loss of your beautiful daughter.

🚫The mother of a woman allegedly killed by her rapper ex-partner in Logan has described the moment police told her, how the news has rocked the family, and her message for the state government🚫

🚩The devastated mother of a woman allegedly killed by her ex-partner in Slacks Creek says the state government must overhaul the way domestic violence is dealt with before another parent is left grieving their child.

🚩Djuarn Baker-Adams – who was also known as DJ – died of suspected asphyxiation at a home early on Wednesday, with police charging her ex-partner, rapper Ronald Cora, with her murder.

🚩In an interview with this masthead, Ms Baker-Adams’ mother Patrice Power said their family had been left absolutely devastated after seeing her daughter struggle in a tumultuous relationship for the past 10 years.

🚩As a mother, you just hope and pray you never get that knock on the door and I got it yesterday,” she said.

🚩“I just went into shock and I just dropped to the ground.

🚩“It’s just so devastating to think how powerless we are all sitting here now, feeling. We’re all sitting there questioning ourselves: ‘what could we have done? What should we have done?’

🚩“It’s rocked our world. It’s devastated our family. I never thought I would be one of those parents that would be going through this. But at the same time, everything, what we knew, what was going on, it was always a possibility. It always was.”

🚩Ms Baker-Adams death was the fourth alleged domestic-violence-linked murder in Queensland in just 45 days.

🚩Ms Baker-Adams’ death comes just a week after pregnant woman Julia Brunsdon, 23, and partner Michael Waltke, 45, were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide in Charleville.

🚩Previously, new mother Jana Armstrong was reported missing from her Toowoomba home on July 7, with her body found in bushland four days later. Her ex-partner Dharminder Singh, 48, has been charged with her murder.

🚩On June 28, Mallorie Jane Roberts, 23, was shot and killed, allegedly by partner Ethan Midgley, 23, who has been charged with murder.

🚩Ms Power told The Courier-Mail her daughter’s cries for help were not answered and she felt a lot more could have been done to help her prior to her death.

🚩She said the state government needed to do more, particularly as Queensland was a big state and domestic violence incidents had “blown out” of control.

🚩“We’re not the first family and we’re not going to be the last, unfortunately. So they need to restructure the whole thing… It needs a whole big overhaul,” she said.

🚩“I think it’s disgraceful, it’s shocking and it’s very scary.

🚩“There’s many factors that would be driving it… but it should never get to this point where a parent is sitting here once again grieving for their child when it could have been prevented.”

🚩Police have previously confirmed they had contact with Ms Baker-Adams in relation to domestic violence-related issues within the past 10 days.

🚩Detective Inspector Ian Galpin on Wednesday said police received a phone call from the man at 12.27am, saying the woman was unresponsive at his home after an alleged assault.

🚩Rapper Cora, known by his stage name MC Triks, was arrested at the home after police and paramedics tried to resuscitate the woman but she died about 1am.

🚩“It’s just not good enough,” Ms Power said.

🚩“I think there should be more serious action taken if a woman is in need of immediate help (or are in) danger from their partner.”

🚩She said volatile relationships known to police needed to be closely monitored.

🚩“They (the state government) can throw as much money out as they want but what are you going to do with it? That’s what we want to know. Where is this money going to go to on the ground,” she said.

🚩She said the “pieces of paper” the courts handed out meant nothing.

🚩“I just feel helpless. I’m going to uni, I’m a uni student and I’m studying social work. And my outcome was I wanted to work with DV and child services. But now, I don’t feel like I want to do that now,” she said.

“We just want everyone to know that she’s got a loving family that were worried for her, that cared for her and she did not deserve this.”

🚩Ms Power said the family feared going to police would have put her daughter in “immediate danger”.

She said she wanted people to know that her daughter was very loved by her family.

“We’re a family of five, and it has just broken us into many pieces. It’s going to take a
long time to recover from this, because Djuarn was a very important part in our family,” she said.

“When Djuarn was around, you knew she was here. She would tell you what she thought. She knew what she wanted in life and she was also very loving, forgiving and giving.

“And she had a lot of beautiful friends. She would help anyone out. If a friend was in need at 1am in the morning, she was there.”

🚩Ms Baker-Adams’ grandmother was prominent Aboriginal activist Rosalie Kunoth-Monks.

🚩Ms Power said she hoped her daughter was remembered for the loving girl she was.

“She was a very caring, loving, individual person. She was an artist,” she said.

“She loved school, teachers loved her. She was very involved with the Redcliffe Youth Space and they absolutely adored her and they will be devastated.”

Cora’s matter was briefly mentioned at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday and adjourned to Beenleigh Magistrates Court on August 27.

While they were here, they popped into Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge to connect with our team, learn more about our space and understand firsthand what support is available for victim-survivors.

Building these relationships is so important. When someone in their community needs support, they’ll know where to bring them, who they can connect with and that they have a safe place to turn to. 🤝🏾

We’re looking forward to continuing to build strong networking, partnerships and support across communities throughout the Barkly. 🌿

TCWR was also grateful to share some donated items with these amazing women to take back to their community and distribute to those who may need a little extra support during times of crisis. ❤️
