What is Family Violence?
Family Violence refers to abusive behaviour within family relationships where one family member uses power and control over another.
Unlike domestic violence, which often specifically refers to abuse within intimate partnerships, family violence can occur among various family members, including between siblings, parents and children, or extended family members.
It is commonly used to describe patterns of abuse within families, where the harm impacts multiple family members and can also affect children witnessing the violence.
Impact of Family Violence
Family violence has significant consequences for both immediate victims and others in the household. It can lead to
- Physical and Mental Health Issues
Physical injuries, chronic health problems, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other psychological effects. - Intergenerational Trauma
Children who witness or experience family violence are at higher risk of trauma and may struggle with relationships and self-esteem as adults. - Community and Social Impact
Family violence contributes to broader social issues, impacting healthcare, social services, and communities as a whole.
